Care guide · Stones and silver
Natural stones and sterling silver are made to last. A few simple habits keep them bright for years.
The golden rules
- Put jewelry on last: after perfume, lotion, sunscreen and hairspray.
- Take it off first: before showers, pools, the sea, workouts and cleaning.
- Wipe after wearing: a soft dry cloth removes sweat and oils.
- Store separately: in a dry pouch or box, so stones do not scratch each other.
Caring for 925 sterling silver
Sterling silver can darken slowly when it meets air, moisture and sweat. This is normal and easy to fix: it polishes back to full shine.
- Polish gently with a soft silver polishing cloth.
- Do not use rough cloths or abrasive pastes on stones or on gold plating.
- Keep it away from chlorine and salt water.
- Gold-plated pieces: avoid rubbing, water and chemicals, which wear the plating faster.
What each stone can take
Hardness is measured on the Mohs scale from 1 to 10. Harder stones resist scratches, softer ones need more care. Values below are typical.
| Stone | Hardness | Care note |
|---|---|---|
| Tiger's eye, amethyst | About 7 | Very durable. Keep amethyst out of strong sun. |
| Onyx | 6.5 to 7 | Durable. Avoid hard knocks. |
| Labradorite | 6 to 6.5 | Avoid knocks and ultrasonic cleaners. |
| Turquoise | 5 to 6 | Porous. Keep away from oils, creams and water. |
| Lapis lazuli | 5 to 5.5 | Soft. Keep dry, no chemicals. |
| Obsidian | 5 to 5.5 | Glass. It can chip with a hard knock. |
| Lava stone | Porous rock | Absorbs liquids. Keep dry and dust with a soft brush. |

Questions people ask
Can I shower with my bracelet?
It is better not to. Water, soap and shampoo can dull silver and harm porous or soft stones.
How do I clean a stone bracelet?
Wipe it with a soft, barely damp cloth, then dry it right away. Do not soak it.
Why did my silver darken?
Sterling silver reacts with air and sweat. A silver polishing cloth restores the shine.
How should I store it?
In a dry pouch or box, away from direct sunlight, and apart from other jewelry.
