Stone guide · Lava Stone
Rock born in a volcano, with a rough, matte texture that feels different from any polished bead. It is the backbone of the modern men's bracelet.
What it is
Lava stone is volcanic rock, usually basalt, formed when molten lava cools and traps tiny gas bubbles. Those bubbles make the surface full of small pores, which gives the bead its rough, earthy look. Because it is porous, each bead is lighter than a polished stone of the same size, and no two look exactly alike.
Why people like it
Lava stone has an honest, unpolished character. It looks good with plain tees, with linen, with a suit sleeve. Many people also put a drop of essential oil on the beads, because the porous surface holds scent for a while. That is a popular habit, not a property we claim for the stone itself.
How to style it
- With onyx: all-black, a clean and bold look.
- With tiger's eye: warm brown stripes against dark lava.
- With labradorite: a flash of blue on a rough base.
- With howlite: white and black for a graphic contrast.

Caring for lava stone
- Because it is porous, it absorbs liquids. Keep it dry and away from perfume and lotions.
- Brush lightly with a soft dry brush if dust gathers in the pores.
- If you add essential oil, use a small drop and expect the bead to hold the scent and a slight mark.
- Take it off for showers, pools and heavy cleaning.
Questions people ask
Is lava stone a real gemstone?
It is natural volcanic rock, not a crystal gemstone, valued for texture and color.
Is lava stone heavy?
No. It is lighter than polished stone beads of the same size.
Can I get lava stone wet?
Brief splashes are fine, but because it is porous, avoid soaking and dry it afterwards.
Is lava stone for men or women?
Both. It is very popular in men's bracelets and also works in smaller bead sizes.
