Stone guide · Onyx
Deep, dark and easy to wear. Onyx is the stone behind most black bead bracelets, and it works with almost everything.
What it is
Onyx is a banded form of chalcedony, which belongs to the quartz family. Natural onyx has parallel stripes of different shades. Black beads are the classic choice for jewelry. The name comes from the Greek word for fingernail, because of the way the banded stone looks. With a hardness around 6.5 to 7, onyx is tough enough for everyday wear.
Matte or polished?
The same stone can look very different depending on the finish. Polished onyx is glossy and sharp, a bit dressier. Matte onyx is soft and velvety, more casual and modern. Many of our pieces mix both, so you get contrast in one bracelet.
How to style it
- With tiger's eye: black and gold-brown, a warm and bold classic.
- With lava stone: rugged texture, popular in men's bracelets.
- With labradorite or sodalite: a hint of blue against the black.
- In gold plating: black beads with warm metal look sharp and formal.
Caring for onyx
- Wipe with a soft damp cloth, then dry it.
- Keep it away from perfume and strong cleaners.
- Take it off for heavy work, sport and swimming.
- Store it apart from other jewelry to avoid scratches.
