Stone guide · Labradorite
A quiet grey stone that suddenly flashes electric blue and green when it catches the light. Every bead is a little different.
What it is
Labradorite is a feldspar mineral. Inside the stone are thin, stacked layers that bend light, so the colors appear and vanish as you move your wrist. This effect is called labradorescence. The stone was named after Labrador in Canada, where it was described in the 18th century. It is also found in Madagascar and Finland.
A stone that moves with you
Look at labradorite straight on and it can seem plain grey. Tilt it and the surface lights up. That is why it suits people who like jewelry with a bit of mystery. In folklore, a Labrador legend links the stone to the northern lights, which fits its look. It is a story and a symbol, not a medical claim.
How to wear it
Labradorite is cool and moody, so it pairs well with dark stones and with silver. Gold plating makes the flashes read warmer and softer.
- With onyx: deep black makes the blue flash stand out.
- With lava stone: a rugged, textured everyday look.
- With amazonite: cool blue-green tones that echo the flash.
- In silver or gold plating: cool and sharp, or warm and soft.

Taking care of it
- Wipe with a soft, barely damp cloth, then dry.
- Keep it away from perfume, hand sanitizer and cleaning products.
- Do not use ultrasonic cleaners. Hard knocks can chip the layers.
- Store it apart from harder stones.
