What it is

Sodalite is a rich blue mineral that contains a lot of sodium, which is where the name comes from. It was first described in Greenland in the early 1800s, and is now also found in Canada, Brazil and other countries. Polished beads show deep blue, often with white veins or patches of calcite running through them. Hardness is around 5.5 to 6.

Sodalite or lapis lazuli?

The two look alike at first glance, but a closer look tells them apart. Sodalite is usually a single mineral with white veins, while lapis lazuli is a rock that often carries golden flecks.

How to style it

  • With onyx and hematite: dark and cool, a strong men's combination.
  • With howlite: blue and white, fresh and summery.
  • With tiger's eye: blue against warm gold-brown.
  • With lava stone: a rugged base under the blue.

Care

  • Wipe with a soft, barely damp cloth, then dry it.
  • Keep it away from strong chemicals and perfume.
  • Avoid hard knocks, as sodalite can chip or crack.
  • Store apart from harder stones.
